Course Overview:

The Foreman Leadership Certificate Program is a highly interactive program designed to support the development of skills needed to lead operations crews in the electric utility industry. Activities, both inside and outside, reinforce learning and provide opportunities to practice and develop skills. The activities also keep the participants engaged and energized during the long program days. The program consists of two, two-and-a-half-day sessions; the sessions can be taken 2 to 12 months apart but should be taken in order.

What do others need from me as a leader? On day one, participants share their experiences since the last session, get acquainted with colleagues in small groups, and relate some of their own experiences back to the entire class. An outdoor activity will help recap the key factors and values needed to be a successful foreman. The rest of the day will focus on communication and developing skills to listen, understand and respond to the intended message. A tailboard activity will utilize all the skills learned during day one. Day two continues with the communication theme utilizing a mini communications assessment tool. They will focus on the larger utility, communicating up and with community members and/or internal customers. A talk with a local utility leader will help bring a real-life touch to this topic. Scenarios and activities will be included to support learning. How you make decisions, and take action, is impacted by the situation. A mini-module on leading, based on the situation, and the needs of the team member, will be introduced here. This will include an activity that will vary based on location. Be prepared to go outside! Day three will focus on decision-making, change, and working with the various generations in the workforce today. This industry is evolving so quickly that being able to recognize the stress that comes from change and have some tools to manage it, is key. We will recap the entire program and ensure participants clarify a learning/tool that they can use immediately. “People learn nothing when they’re asleep, and very little when they’re bored," John Cleese.

Course Schedule:

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on day one; the class will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on days one and two, and from 8:30 a.m. to noon on day three.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellations are accepted with a full refund as follows:

For webinars and virtual classes, if the request is made at least five days prior to the course, then 100% of the registration fee will be refunded.

For in-person events, the following fee structure applies: cancellation at least 30 days prior to the event, full refund; within 15-29 days, $100 fee; and within 1-14 days or no show, 100% of the registration fee. When possible, please send a substitute instead of canceling because NWPPA does not charge a fee for substitutions.

Continuing Hours:

This course qualifies for 15 continuing hours. Certificates are issued upon full completion of the course.
